Mannenvriendschap op een breekpunt

De drie jeugdvrienden Archie, Harry en Gus dragen een vriend ten grave. Zijn dood raakt hen elk op een andere wijze. Ze worden teruggeworpen op het overdenken van hun verloren idealen, mislukte relaties en carrières en al hun nog te realiseren ambities. In een impuls reizen ze af naar Londen. Ze herbeleven hun jongensjaren en leven al hun mannelijke fantasieën uit. Een trip, in alle opzichten.

Barry Atsma, Hans Kesting en Roeland Fernhout geven op weergaloze wijze invulling aan de drie typen echtgenoten. Een even grote prestatie wordt geleverd door Halina Reijn, die in haar eentje niet alleen alle vrouwen speelt, maar ze allemaal lijkt te zijn.

Via kleine camera's die op de hoofden van de acteurs bevestigd zijn, voltrekt het verhaal op filmschermen zich bijna letterlijk vanuit het hoofd van de personages.

Husbands is gebaseerd op het filmscript van John Cassavetes. Ivo van Hove heeft een intense relatie opgebouwd met het oeuvre van de filmmaker. In zijn gelauwerde voorstellingen van de films Opening Night en Faces heeft hij samen met zijn krachtige acteurs bewezen er theater in zijn zuiverste vorm van te kunnen maken.

Husbands werd internationaal gecoproduceerd binnen het Prospero project en was exclusief te zien in zes grote Europese theaters en Stadsschouwburg Amsterdam.

Three childhood friends, Archie, Harry and Gus are burying their friend. His death affects each one in a different way. They are thrown back into reflecting on their lost ideals, failed relationships and careers and all their as yet unrealised ambitions. On the spur of the moment they travel to London. They relive the years of their youth and act out their male fantasies. A trip, in all respects.

Barry Atsma, Hans Kesting and Roeland Fernhout give unparalleled interpretations of the three types of husband. An equally great performance is given by Halina Reijn, who doesn't just play every female character, but seems to become them. Via small cameras placed on the actors' heads, the story unfolds on cinema screens, literally from the minds of the characters.

In his celebrated pieces based on the films Opening Night and Faces he has proven that, together with his powerful actors, he can make theatre in its most pure form.
